Insurance for foreigners in Spain

Insurance in Spain

What insurance Policies are available for foreigners who would like to reside in Spain?

If a foreigner wishes to reside in Spain, it is important for them ensure they have adequate coverage for their medical needs. Here are some key points regarding health insurance for foreigners.

Health Insurance is generally obligatory for foreign residents in Spain. The specific requirement may depend on the individual’s residency status.

Legal Residents. Foreigners who become legal residents in Spain, such as through work, study or family reunification, may be required to have health insurance coverage as part of their residency application process. However, they are eligible to access the public healthcare system, the SNS. As part of the residency process, individuals may need to register with the Spanish Social Security System and obtain a social security number.

Non-EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens. Those planning to reside in Spain must have health insurance coverage that meets a certain criteria. The insurance must provide comprehensive coverage, including emergency care hospitalization and repatriation.

Private Health Insurance. Many foreigners in Spain, regardless of the nationality, opt for private health insurance. Private health insurance provides access to private healthcare facilities and offers a broader range of services compared to the public system. It may cover medical consultations, hospitalization, diagnostic tests, medications, emergency care, specialist care and in some cases include Dental care.

What is Cuadro Medico?

This is a network panel of healthcare providers and medical professionals with whom an insurance company has a contractual agreement. For foreigners having access to Cuadro Medico can be beneficial. It is a list of doctors, hospitals, clinics, specialists and other healthcare facilities that are affiliated with the insurance company.

Provider Network: the insurance company maintains the network of healthcare providers, for example hospitals, clinics, doctors and diagnostic centres. These providers have agreed to provide services to the insured individuals at pre-negotiated rates.

Preferred providers: Whom the insurance company has established a strong partnership. These providers are selected based on their quality of care, reputation and range of services.
Coverage and cost benefits: When you receive medical services from healthcare providers with the cuadro medico, your insurance policy may offer certain benefits. These may include direct billing (where the provider bills the insurance company directly), discounted rates, or reduced out of pocket expenses compared to using providers outside of the network.

Provider Search: Insurance companies usually provide policyholders with a directory or search tool to easily locate healthcare providers within their cuadro medico. This helps insured individuals find doctors or specialists in their area who are covered by their insurance plan.

Reembolso
This health insurance provides policyholders with flexibility and choice when it comes to healthcare providers. It allows individuals to access medical care from providers they trust or prefer, even if they are not in the insurance company’s network. However, its important to consider that reembolso insurance often involves higher out of pocket costs initially, as you need to pay upfront and wait of reimbursement from the insurance company. Additionally, reimbursement rates and maximum limits can vary between insurance policies, so it’s crucial to review the terms and conditions of your specific insurance policy.

In Spain, it is mandatory by law for all vehicles to have Third-party Liability insurance (Seguro de Responsibilidad Civil Obligatoria). The purpose of this insurance is to protect victims of accidents caused by the insured vehicle. It ensures that they receive compensation for their injuries or property damage, regardless of the financial situation of the at fault driver.
